Post-op Instructions

Implant Surgery

  • Discomfort and bleeding on the day of the surgery are normal.

  • Prescribed medications should be taken as instructed by Doctor.

  • Apply ice over the surgical site to reduce swelling.

  • DO NOT smoke (avoid smoking for a few days after the surgery)

  • DO NOT spit

  • DO NOT use a straw on the day of the surgery

Deep Cleanings

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold is common (especially after deep cleaning).

  • Do not eat anything until the numbness has worn off.

  • Some bleeding is normal when brushing for a day or two after cleaning.

  • Continue brushing and flossing.

Dentures and Removable Prosthetics

  • Some discomfort with any new denture or removable prosthetics is normal for the first few days. All new prosthetics require several adjustments to completely and comfortably fit your mouth, mainly if extractions were part of the treatment.

  • Dentures must be removed every night, cleaned, and keep them in a clean container containing water or denture cleaning solution. It is imperative your gums rest.

  • Clean dentures thoroughly with a brush and water before putting them back in your mouth.

  • Difficulty speaking is common the first couple of days.

Crown and Fixed Bridges

  • Avoid chewing or eating while numb.

  • Do not chew on site of treatment.

  • The temporary crown is placed to protect natural tooth and esthetic reasons; however, the temporary crown can come off. If the temporary crown is to come off, try to save the crown and call our office. Temporary crowns should be replaced immediately to avoid damaging the natural tooth. To avoid losing your temporary crown, avoid chewing on the treatment side.

  • After the permanent restoration is placed, you may feel slight pressure for a few days. Also, the bite may feel different for a day or two. But if the bite feels uneven or you feel discomfort while chewing on the tooth after 2-3 days, call our office. Delaying the necessary adjustments may damage the tooth permanently.

Root Canals

  • Avoid chewing on the side of the procedure.

  • Avoid GUM, SMOKING, SPITING, and drinking from STRAW.

  • DO NOT brush teeth near the treated site.

  • Avoid inspecting the treated site with hands, especially while numb.

  • Take medication as prescribed by the doctor.

  • Do not bite on the tooth while you are numb.

  • If a permanent restoration is required, return as soon as possible to complete.

  • Chew with the opposite side of treatment.

  • Continue your brushing and flossing.

  • Delayed placement of final restoration may damage the tooth permanently.

  • In case of extreme urgency, call 911.

Extractions

  • Apply pressure to gauze pad that has been placed on extraction site for one hour. If the bleeding continues, wash hands and place new gauze. New gauze should be placed, and pressure applied for another 45 minutes.

  • If you supervise a patient who has had an extraction done, monitor the patient to make sure they don t bite on their numb lips or tongue, especially if the patient is a minor0 (it can cause serious injury to their soft tissue).

  • Avoid hot food or beverages on the day of your extraction.

  • Do not rinse your mouth.

  • Do not use a straw for drinking.

  • Do not spit

  • Do not drink carbonated beverages.

  • Do not brush on the day of the surgery; resume brushing 24 hours after surgery.

  • Some extractions may produce bruising and/or some swelling, especially after the extraction of third molars, also known as wisdom teeth. Ice bag application and medication prescribed for you will help to minimize your discomfort and swelling.

  • Please take all medication as directed by the doctor.

  • 24-72 hours after surgery, it is recommended to maintain a diet of soft food and liquids.

  • For more complex Surgical Procedures, specific instructions will be provided to you at the time of your treatment and/or caretaker.

  • In case of serious emergency call 911.
